Principal
Job Description
Principals are in charge of creating a school atmosphere for both teachers and students that can be successful given the goals and challenges each school may face. Principals hire and evaluate teachers, help shape curriculum, and actively work with parents to meet mandates for achievement.
Educational Paths
In most public schools, principals may need a master’s degree in education administration or educational leadership. Some principals and central office administrators have a doctorate or specialized degree in education administration. Most states require principals to be licensed as school administrators. License requirements vary by state, but nearly all states require either a master’s degree or some other graduate-level training, and others require candidates to pass a test. Private school requirements may differ from school to school.
Job Outlook
The number of administrative positions will continue to increase as more administrative responsibilities are placed on individual schools, particularly with regard to monitoring student achievement.
