Elementary school teachers play an important role in childhood development by helping shape children’s views of themselves and the world. Unlike high school teachers who tend to specialize in one subject, elementary school teachers usually instruct one class of children in several subjects including math, language, science, and social studies. A small percentage focus on one special subject – such as music, art, reading, or phys ed – and teach students at all grade-levels.

Educational Requirements
Public school teachers are required to be licensed through the state board of education. Each state board has its own specific requirements, but many require a bachelor’s degree in education. If you already have a bachelor’s degree in another field, don’t worry – all states now offer alternative licensure programs so you can earn your teaching credential or license without starting from ground zero. Licensing is not required for private school teachers in most states.
